Reviewing The Buckhorn Lake Resort

Traveling through Texas to Arizona along I-10 is a long drive! After leaving the Cajun Palms RV Resort, my next stop is 490 miles away in Kerrville, Texas. It is a nice and clean RV Campground called Buckhorn Lake Resort. They tout that they are “Simply the finest RV Resort in Texas” located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. Good Sams gives them a perfect rating (10/10*/10). Buckhorn Lake Resort is conveniently located just off I-10 at Exit 501.

The Check-In Process

Making a reservation is simple. While they don’t have a hi-tech online booking system, you can fill out the needed information on a simple contact form and they will respond back to you during business hours to confirm and obtain your payment information. I have stayed at Buckhorn Lake twice and both times I checked in after-hours with no problems. On my most recent trip, I had to reschedule a few things and they accommodated my change with no issues. Upon arrival, you will certainly enjoy the pristine appearance with well maintained paved roads. But if you show up after hours (with reservations), don’t worry. They will have a packet for you near the office door with your RV site info.

The RV Sites

When heading to your landscaped site, you will enjoy a level concrete pad with full hook-ups for  30 and 50 amp RVs. Free cable and wifi are also available at each site. I do like the hook-up connections (photos in the gallery below) that keep things nice and neat and also provide a “night light” for the connections. On my second stay, the only issue I experienced at my site was the location of a tree that prevented me from putting out my awning. Since I was only staying one night, it wasn’t a big deal. Based on the customer service I experienced, I am confident they would have relocated me if I was staying longer.

The Amenities

Buckhorn Lake has what you need to make it a comfortable stay. One of the things I liked is they had a separate adult only area with a pool, bathhouse, and laundry room. Don’t get me wrong, I love kids but I just don’t love the parents who don’t control their kids. The pool areas are basic but they are sufficient. On their website, the following amenities were listed:

  • Cable TV – Local and Network DirecTV Stations
  • Country Store – Well stocked with reasonable prices
  • Exercise / Fitness Center – Fully equipped with exercise bikes, multi-station center, and elliptical trainer
  • Telephone – Instant-on (Free local calls)
  • Free access to WiFi.  DSL Internet available at your site for a minimal fee (pick up modem in office)
  • 30/50 Amp Service
  • Adult Only Section
  • Daily trash pick-up at each site
  • Pickle Ball Court
  • Tennis Court – enclosed and surfaced
  • Basketball Court
  • Fishing – Stocked ponds; catch and release only – no license required
  • Enclosed Dog Park
  • Laundry Facilities
  • Private Dressing Rooms and Showers
  • Swimming Pools and Whirlpool Spas
  • 9 Hole Practice Putting Green
  • Year-Round RV Storage

Review & Recommendations

Buckhorn Lake is definitely deserving of their Good Sams’s perfect rating of 10/10*/10. Personally, I have never viewed it as a destination location, but my parents have been to Kerrville before and my mother said if she was going to move to Texas, Kerrville probably would be the place. Their monthly rates are pretty decent, so I will probably at some point go for a month and check the area out. But when passing through Texas on I-10, it’s definitely on my lists to stop at during my travels.

If you are looking for an area in Texas to make as your home base, they do offer a section known as The Club at Buckhorn which is a Class A Motorhome only community where you can have your own Casita for additional living. While I am not a fan of places that do not permit Class C Motorhomes (that can be larger and cost more than a class A).
